How is it that an 80-year-old movie can still capture the hearts and minds of children, but a modern retelling of the story as a televised series often falls flat? It isn't as if director Victor Fleming saw the age of YouTube and made a movie that fits into two-minute chunks. And yet, somehow, there hasn't been a successful version of The Wizard of Oz or any of Baum's other Oz based-stories since the 1939 Warner Brothers musical. Like Superman and Mickey Mouse, these characters and images are ingrained in our minds. There isn't a kid in America, and probably in most of the world, who doesn't know about the Yellow Brick Road or the Wicked Witch of the West. Frank Baum's book series about the land of Oz and its inhabitants have been turned into musicals, plays, comics, cartoons, video games, and every other type of merchandise you can think of. Keller was sent away on Oz and there was Stabler, all detective-y and present on SVU.Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion are about as iconic as any fictional characters can be. L. With the dual roles, a lot of these guys disappear for chunks of time on one series, it seems. Scott also appeared on one of my favorite shows, Angel, but no Dean in sight, darn it. Keller was feared, though, and I think some of the Keller mojo rubbed off on Beecher at times.īoth of the Winters brothers appeared on NYPD. I think his Brian Cassidy character just sort of disappeared from SVU w/o any explanation (a pet peeve of mine on TV shows - right up with using a different actor for the same character.)Īnd Wet Hot American Summer?! No, Beecher wasn't really feared, as he was the one put in there not because he was a hardened criminal, but because he farked up once in his life. Dean Winters might have been on NYPD BLue this and last season, unless I'm mixing him up with somebody.

Scott William Winters might have been on NYPD BLue this and last season, unless I'm mixing him up with somebody. On SVU he's kind of a bad ass - definitely has an edge and a temper, and admitted that he would like to kill pedophiles, which landed him in some hot water.Īnd very interesting that the O'Reilly brothers were played by brothers - didn't know that. I didn't think Beecher was particularly feared, though. I haven't seen much of SVU to compare the two characters, as almost every episode I have caught has Stabler just doing the detective thing in the background. Keller is the lover of Lee Tergesen's Tobias Beecher he was also one of the most feared criminals in Oz.

Keller is Chris Meloni's character on Oz - he plays Stabler on SVU. The most notable for me was Wet Hot American Summer, where he played a Vietnam vet camp cook who is just freakin' insane. I've only seen Chris Meloni in a few things other than Oz. The brother, Cyril O'Reily, is played by Dean's brother, Scott Williams Winter. The guy with the slow brother also in jail would be Ryan O'Reily, played by Dean Winters. And is Keller Chris Melino or the guy whose slow brother was also in jail? If Melino, has he been in much else? I wonder b/c his characters on the shows, though diametrically opposite in terms of 1 being a detective and the other a hardcore criminal, are also fairly similar - kind of like bizarro versions of the same guy.
